Rob is a pop music junkie who runs his own semi-failing record store. His girlfriend, Laura, has just left him for the guy upstairs, and Rob is both miserable and relieved. After all, could he have spent his life with someone who has a bad record collection? Rob seeks refuge in the company of the offbeat clerks at his store, who endlessly review their top five films (Reservoir Dogs...); top five Elvis Costello songs ("Alison"...); top five episodes of Cheers (the one where Woody sang his stupid song to Kelly...). Rob tries dating a singer whose rendition of "Baby, I Love Your Way" makes him cry. But maybe it's just that he's always wanted to sleep with someone who has a record contract. Then he sees Laura again. And Rob begins to think (awful as it sounds) that life as an episode of thirtysomething, with all the kids and marriages and barbecues and k.d. lang CD's that this implies, might not be so bad.

Tam bir erkek kitabı :) Okuduktan sonra size sürekli top5 listesi yaptırtıyor. :) Rob isimli ve muhtemelen kitabı okuyan her erkeğin de öyküneceği bir adam var. Bu adam bir gün hayatta ve ilişkilerinde neden başarılı olamadığını sorgulamaya karar veriyor. E yaş olmuş 30 küsür, sahip olduğu tek şey bir plakçı dükkanı ve 2 de manyak arkadaş. Gerçi bunlarla niye yetinemiyor lan daha ne olsun da denebilir kendisi için ama belli ki hayal ettiğinden çok farklı bir konumda kendisi ve kritik bir karar alıp tüm eski sevgilileriyle yüzleşmeye başlıyor.
Kitabı okumak gerçekten inanılmaz keyif verici. Hele ki rock müziği de seviyorsanız kitap sizin kütüphanenizde mutlaka yer almalı bana kalırsa. Yaşanan her olayı bir şarkı ismiyle özetlemek ya da desteklemek... Sanki kitabın soundtracki varmış hissine kapılıyorsunuz. Hatta bir yerden sonra o şarkıları dinleyerek okuyabilirsiniz o bölümleri. Filmi de var zaten ve John Cusack müthiş bir Rob yaratıyor ekranda sağ olsun. Kitabı okuduktan sonra filmi de mutlaka görmelisiniz, muhteşem bir uyarlama olmuş gerçekten.
Otuz beş yaşında ancak yetişkin olamamış bir adamın hikâyesi: Terk edilmeler, eski aşklar, yeni sevgililer, aile ve arkadaşlar... Erkek dünyasını anlamak için güzel bir roman. İçinde 70'ler-80'ler-90'lar pop'una dair çok şeyler bulabileceğiniz bir kitap. Bunu seven (daha çocuksu olmakla birlikte) Uygar Şirin'den Karışık Kaset'i de sever...
